Appeal Democrat Wednesday April 2, 1957 pg 20 Arthur L Phillips Phillips - Arthur Leighton Phillips, 70, died early this morning in Rideout Hospital following a two months illness. Phillips was a native of Meshoppen, Penn, and had been a resident of Wheatland for the past 45 years. He lived at 111 Fourth Street. He had been a land leveling contractor in the 1940's and early 1950's until he had to give up the contracting business because of failing health. He continued to operate heavy equipment until January. From 1916 to 1925, Phillips had operated a garage in Wheatland and later had owned a peach orchard which is now the Whitney Warren ranch. He had retained other farming interests along with his contracting business. Phillips had operated one of the first tractors in the Wheatland area. He had been a member of the operating engineer's local No. 3 in Marysville for 32 years and was a member of the Wheatland Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Dam Phillips: three sons, Arthur of Los Angeles, Stewart of Sacramento and Eugene of Chico; two daughters, Mrs Elaine Tarke of Meridian and Elizabeth Phillips of Wheatland; one brother, Stewart Phillips, Pennsylvania; and two sisters, Mrs Evangeline Farr and Mrs Harriet Cole, Pennsylvania and four grandsons. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hutchison's Colonial Chapel with Rev. Victor Hatfield, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Wheatland cemetery.
