James Edward Schaffner mourned at age of 86
DOWNEY-Cremation services were private for James Edward Schaffner, a resident of Downey for more 
than 50 years who was active in the drive to incorporate the community into a city. 
He was born in North Fork, Virginia on Jan. 7, 1915 to parents James and Mary. He served in the Air Force 
in World War II and worked for more than 10 years for Houghton Industries as a sales representative. 
He liked to travel and loved sports. As a teenager he played football and basketball in high school. 
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Marie; sisters Barbara Knable and Ruth Lenore. 
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
