Mountain Messenger 10/01/1898, Pg. 2 DIED SCHEFFER At Forest City, September 20th, 1898, Katherine Scheffer, wife of George Scheffer and daughter of L. L. Kelleghan, a native of California, aged about 22 years. Pg. 3 Death of Mrs. Kate Scheffer - After many months of suffering, Mrs. Kate Scheffer passed away this (Friday) morning at her Forest home, surrounded by the members of her family. Before the illness occurred which resulted in her death, the deceased was a stout, robust woman, full of health, and light hearted and happy, but suffering and disease so reduced her that when she last visited Downieville she was but a shadow of he former self. Mrs. Scheffer was a woman who made friends with whomever she came in contact. She was of a kind hearted disposition, and was always animated with a desire to make others happy. Her loss will be deeply regretted by all. She was born at Howland Flat about 22 years ago, and when quite young moved with her parents to Forest. She was married at Nevada City on July 5th, 1897 to George Scheffer of Forest. Besides her husband, a father and several sisters are left to mourn her loss. . As we go to press no arrangements have been made for the funeral. It will probably take place at Forest on Sunday. Mountain Messenger 10/08/1898, Pg. 3 Laid to Rest The last sad rites were performed over the remains of Mrs. Kate Scheffer at Forest last Sunday afternoon, and, despite the inclemency of the weather, the funeral was one of the largest held in Forest in many years. Several from Downieville attended, while many came from Alleghany to testify to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The funeral services were performed by Father Dermody, who preached a touching sermon over the remains.
