The Downey Eagle Friday, January 3, 1997 Vol. 4 No. 45 DOWNEY-Jay William Shanor, a longtime Downey resident, died Dec. 24.Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Jan. 13, 1913, he grew up in western Pennsylvania and attended college at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh where he studied mechanical engineering. His education was interrupted by World War II, and he worked in the defense effort as general manager at Kobuta, the first artificial rubber company in the U.S. Jay and his wife, Naomi, raised four children, Dawn Ann Wetzel, Jay William Shanor II, Margaret Sarah Cantelon, and Connie Mae Worsham. After the war the family spent a short time in Michigan where he worked as a general contractor building fireplace chimneys. He moved his family to Downey in 1959 and worked for Southwest Steel in Los Angeles for 15 years, retiring in 1975. He was a skater, swimmer and bowling anchorman for many teams, and was involved in family activities. He loved to spend time at the pool teaching children to swim and dive, or at the Downey High tennis courts. He also loved to read and play the piano. He joined the Downey Masonic Lodge in 1970 and was a member of the Downey First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Naomi; four children; grandchildren Bonnie, John, Tawny, Larry, Kimberly, Carol, Kate, David, Susan, Brenda, Christi, Curtis, Kelli and Jason; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
