Source Unknown; Date Unknown Jack Alvin Stewart, 76, passed away September 1, 2000 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield after a short illness. He was born March 18, 1924 in Los Angeles, California and moved to Kern County with his family, graduating from Shafter High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. During the war, he saw battle in Italy, France, and Germany. Mr. Stewart worked at Tehachapi Hospital before retiring to open a green house and nursery business in Ridgecrest. At the time of his death, he had lived in California City for thirty years. Mr. Stewart was a member of the Mojave Elks Lodge and among his favorite pastimes were reading and collecting coins. Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Hettie of California City; children Bob Stewart, Tehachapi; Kathleen Colbert, Redding, CA; Shirley Osborn, Paradise, CA; Russell Stewart, Corning, CA; step-children, Dan Spurgeon, Santa Margarita, CA; Stan Spurgeon, Arroyo Grande, CA; Cynthia Parris, California City; twelve grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. A memorial service was held Wednesday, September 6, at First Baptist Church in California City.
