According to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Smith and the San Bernardino County Coroner's office, Sweet was a passenger in a 1988 Ford Pickup driven by his father, Alfred Sweet, 42, also of California City. Smith said the vehicle was being driven northbound on Trona Road near the Union Pacific Railroad crossing just south of Searles Station Road "at an undetermined high rate of speed," when the right rear tire blew out. According to Smith, Sweet overcorrected and the vehicle rolled several times, inflicting fatal injuries to the passenger and injuring the driver. Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing safety belts, Smith said. The accident was not witnessed and was discovered by a passing motorist about 1 am.
