Redlands Daily Facts; 07/16/2009 James Christian Westengard, January 16, 1949-July 10, 2009 Born in Los Angeles, California, Jim passed away at his home in Redlands, California surrounded by his devoted wife of thirty-eight years, Angela, and his two loving daughters, Kate and Laura. A researcher in hematopathology at Loma Linda University Medical Center for the past thirty years, Jim especially enjoyed working with his colleagues and friends. He co-authored 25 scientific papers over the years, which were published in various prestigious scholarly publications including JAMA, Lancet, and many more. Jim's unique approach to scientific discovery, especially his unusual skill in statistical analysis, was helpful to many researchers at Loma Linda University and elsewhere. Jim's background in Clinical Laboratory Science gave him creative insights into the many ways in which scientific data could be profitably analyzed. His statistical skills were applied in areas as diverse as medical student admissions, the influence of laughter in physiology, nutritional supplements, blood disorders, and the development of new and more sensitive hematology tests. Jim was especially known to all as a dedicated and loving family man. His only grandson, Michael Cherry, was an extraordinary light in his life. An avid reader of philosophy, science, and books on green architecture, Jim also loved walking miles a day, and he used his scientific creativity to concoct wonderful recipes in the family kitchen. Jim (aka "Jimmy, Papa, Dad") will live on in the hearts of all he touched. His quiet kindness, compassion, calm demeanor, and consistent expression of love and acceptance of anyone who knew him will continue to affect the world in a positive way.
