The Downey Eagle August 22, 1997 Volume 5 Number 26 Military burial for Walter Edsel (Ed) White A burial service with military honors was held Aug. 8 at Forest Cemetery and Memorial Park in Oskaloosa, Iowa, for Walter Edsel (Ed) White, a longtime Norwalk resident who died July 31 from lung cancer. He was 74, a retired insurance agent and a longtime watchdog and activist of Norwalk government. He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and graduated from high school there in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1943, receiving an honorable discharge at the Presidio in San Francisco. He lived in Bellflower before moving to Norwalk about 40 years ago. He won several lawsuits against Norwalk City officials over the public's right to information, discrepancies in campaign expenses, and private business calls charged to City phone lines. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen, in 1995. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Lucretia White. Arrangements were by the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Cypress, and Powers Funeral Home in Oskaloosa, Iowa. White "tried to keep the city honest," his wife said. He will be missed by her and many friends.
