A Fremont resident for many years, passed away February 25, 2002 at his home in Volcano, CA at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 57 years Bette Nelson; brothers Paul Stone and Joseph Nelson of Hayward, Wisconsin; loving sons Gerald Nelson of Volcano, John and his wife Gail Nelson of Newark, CA; beloved grandchildren Christine Nelson and her partner Heather Sadlon of Santa Clara, CA; Laura and her husband Matthew Oellerich of Tacoma, WA, and Kari Nelson of Seattle, WA; great-grandchildren Justin, Lilian, and Russell Oellerich of Tacoma, WA. He was preceded in death by great-granddaughter Mariah Oellerich. Howard was born on May 21, 1920 in Hayward, Wisconsin. He was raised and educated in Hayward where he joined the C.C.C. He later enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He worked 27 years at Leslie Salt in Newark. Howard loved Ham Radio, fishing, hunting with his dogs, building homes, wood carving, w! at! er skiing, and fixing just about anything. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Faith Lutheran Church, 22601 Hwy 88, Pioneer CA.
