Donald Dale Akkerman

Donald Dale Akkerman - 79, of Hemet, California passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at home surrounded by his family and friends. Born Saturday, March 5, 1932, he was the husband of Florence "Red" Akkerman for 38 years. They owned an auction barn in Hemet and he loved to be an auctioneer. He began at an early age and would practice his "Calling Routine" while plowing the fields in Iowa. He followed in his Uncle John's footsteps who was also an auctioneer. Donald loved to fish for trout at his favorite spot - Big Bear Lake. He carved many leather creations that he gave to his family. Donald was a perfected storyteller and loved to tell stories to his grandkids. 

Donald was an accomplished self-taught guitarist who, along with Red, played with "The Country Classics." Donald was active in the Sunrise Rotary and served as president and was a member of the Big Bear Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Los Caballos Horse Club. He liked to read James Michener and Louis L'Amour books. He served in the Army and was a Veteran of Korea. 

Donald enjoyed looking at and collecting Indian artifacts through his travels and during his auctions. 

Preceded in death was his grandson, Timothy Akkerman. Surviving are his wife, Florence "Red" Akkerman, sons, Dani Akkerman of Hemet, Calif., David Akkerman of Rocklin, Calif., Gregg Akkerman of Spartanburg, SC and Jeffery Akkerman of Gardner, KS, and daughter, Jody Akkerman of Hemet. Calif.

A celebration of life service was held on Dec. 10, 2011, at 3 p.m.
