Gary Michael Antes
76, passed away in Palm Desert, Calif., on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011. He was diagnosed with
non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in July 2011. Always the optimist, he considered himself fortunate
to have this time to say his goodbyes and make his wishes known to family and friends.
Gary and Joyce moved to Orange County, Calif., in 1960, where he worked as a salesman for
Weyerhaeuser Corp. and Boise Cascade. During this time they had three children, Craig, Anne
and Jeff. He enjoyed being coach for Craig's Little League baseball teams and was an Indian
Guide leader known as the "Silver Fox." He was also a member of Toastmasters International.
An Easter vacation in 1972 brought the family to Big Bear, where Gary saw Bear City Glass was
for sale. Gary learned the trade working in his father's glass shop in San Jose and decided to
purchase Bear City Glass in Sept. of 1972. Gary and Joyce and their family built Bear City Glass
into one of the most respected businesses in Big Bear. Gary's sons Craig and Jeff continue to
operate the business today.
It was the Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake where Gary formed many of his lifelong friendships. He
had a heartfelt dedication to the Rotarian mission of "service above self," served as president and
achieved perfect attendance for his 38 years of membership.
Gary and Joyce enjoyed traveling and welcomed their first grandchild in 1991 before Joyce's passing.
Gary married longtime Big Bear resident, Carol Rose in 1998. They split time between their homes in
Big Bear and Palm Desert. Carol passed away in 2007. In his last years he met and shared a home
with Shirley Fogel in Palm Desert where they enjoyed many social events and travels.
Gary enjoyed his years of retirement engaging in all the activities he loved, including golf, travel and
being with friends and family. His interests were politics, religion, economics and keeping up with
Angels baseball. He was a longtime parishioner at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Big Bear and St.
Francis of Assisi in La Quinta.
He leaves behind a family to which he was devoted. Close friend and brother, Keith Antes of Carmel,
Calif.; son, Craig Antes, his wife Jeannie Houston Antes and their children Antonia and Dane; daughter,
Anne Antes Satterfield, her husband Mark Satterfield and their sons Cole and Derek; and son Jeff Antes,
his wife Kim Hall Antes and their children Kevin, Hillary, and Nathan.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with reception
to follow at the parish hall.
Donations can be made in Gary's name to the American Cancer Society or Rotary International.
