Celina Marie Astencio-Mas
90, passed on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Bear Valley Community Hospital were she lived for the
last 5-1/2 years.
Born on Jan. 20, 1920, in Sancti Spritus, Cuba, to Domingo Astencio and Florina Valdez - Astencio,
she was the oldest of six children.
Celina came to New York in the 1940s where she met and married James A. Mas and had six children.
They relocated to Covina, Calif. in 1960, where she became a nurses aid and worked at the Inter
Community Hospital for many years.
Celina was a wonderful mother who loved to cook and take care of her family. She also enjoyed
crocheting, knitting, reading, music, dancing and gardening.
Celina is survived by two sisters, Dulce Castillo and Mary Garcia, both of New York; a brother, Euclide
Astencio of Florida; six children, James A. Mas of Victorville, Calif., Amelia V. Rios of Rancho Cucamonga,
Calif., Mark A. Mas of La Verne, Calif., Judy Nelson of Bullhead, Ariz., Nancy Gatlin of Big Bear Lake, Calif.,
and Maria Valdivia of Havana, Cuba; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Celina was cremated and will be taken back to her homeland at a later time.
The family would like to thank all of our friends and family for all their thought and prayers and her
extended family at the Bear Valley Community Hospital for all their love and care of Celina.
