Arthur Ralph Fernandez
formerly of Big Bear, passed away Dec. 28, 2011, in Irvine, Calif. He was born on June 19, 1928, the youngest of four, to Pedro and Lupe Fernandez in Tempe, Ariz. He moved to Big Bear in the late '70s, fulfilling a dream he shared with his wife, Dona. As proprietors of Hillcrest Lodge in Big Bear Lake, Art and Dona quickly became a part of the mountain community they loved so much. At first Art commuted down the hill weekly, considering it a small price for the benefit of mountain living. Later, after he “retired,” he returned to his first occupation as a master cabinet maker, and worked on many houses in the area, both new construction and renovations. He was well known for his quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, and his love of wood shone through in each of his jobs.
After Dona’s death in 1997 he continued to live on the mountain, until his health required him to move to Orange County to be closer to his daughter and sons.
He is survived by his children, Patricia (Richard) Walden, Monique (Andrew) Colver, Michael (Nancy) Fernandez, and Jeff (Lan) Fernandez as well five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
