Bernie was raised in Big Bear Lake where she enjoyed ice skating. She married young but experienced tragedy early in life when she lost her husband in an auto accident. Bernie relocated to Bakersfield where she married Bruce Garrett and worked at the Post Office while raising her children. Her adventurous nature took her to several other locations before moving back to Bakersfield to be closer to her family.
Bernie was always a free spirit who brought joy to all who came into her life. Her warm smile and love of life was evidenced by her frequent laughter. Bernie had a special place in her heart for all of God's creations and recently rescued her big "White Dog" from an abusive home.
Bernie's children, grandchildren and great grandchild were the loves of her life and she was very proud of them. One of her greatest joys was seeing the close, loving and supportive relationship of her family.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Gene Laas, and her father, Ronald Scanlon. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Doolittle, Katrina Garcia, Shannon Garrett and Deanna Garrett; her son, Daniel Garrett; her mother, Barbara Bieber; her sisters, Anne Zimmerman, Marie Scanlon, Julie Cochran and Tama Lopez; her brother, Patrick Scanlon; step-brother Jeff Scanlon; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bakersfield Museum of Art at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. The family has requested donations be made to Helping Animals Live Tomorrow (HALT) in Bakersfield, or the charity of your choice in Bernadette's name.
