was born Irma Stanley in Whittier, Calif. on May 13, 1922, and passed away on March 6, 2011. She married
Whitey Hartwell in 1942 during the war. Irma and Whitey returned to Whittier after the war and started their
family. In 1957 they moved to Big Bear Lake with their children and their nephew where Whitey was co-owner
of Bear Valley Market Corporation and Irma was an accountant. They lived in Big Bear for about 48 years. Both
Irma and Whitey were very involved in community activities. She and her late husband, Whitey, loved Big Bear
and were an instrumental part of the Castle Glen Development and were stockholders in Snow Summit and First
Mountain Bank. Irma was involved with the adult literacy program. For many years Irma took part in the Old
Miners Days celebrations and festivities and was treasurer for several years. Family and friends remember Irma
as a very honest, smart, wonderful, and remarkable woman. One family friend said that his daughter wanted "an
Irma" after they had visited one day. They moved to Colorado in 2006 to be closer to their daughter and her family
and because of health problems. Irma spent the last few years in a nursing home and was very content.
Irma is preceded in death by her husband, Whitey and is survived by her son Michael (Stephanie) in Oregon,
daughter, Lark Haines (John), along with her nephew Stuart Magnuson (Palm Springs), 5 grandchildren, 11 great
grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
