Lois Mae (Johnson) Hickey

A longtime resident of Big Bear Lake, Lois turned 85 last Jan. 14, 2013. A short time later, she died peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2013, following a stroke. She was born in Riverside and grew up in Southern California, moving many times in her childhood due to her mother's career. She lived at the Wilson Ranch for several years at Lake Elisabeth (Artesian Wells) with her Aunt Grace and Uncle John Rouff. She graduated from Antelope Valley Joint High School in 1946 in Lancaster, Calif.

Shortly after graduating, she met and married a cattleman, Ray W. Johnson, and lived on the Lazy-3 Ranch just outside Adelanto near El Mirage Lake, Calif.

Ray and Lois sold the ranch in 1953 and moved to La Puente where she worked as a receptionist and secretary from 1955 to 1962 in a hospital. Over time, the smog concentration in Los Angeles became very harmful and she developed a severe case of chemical asthma. For health reasons, in 1962 she moved to the town of Fawnskin on the north side of the Big Bear Valley.

Lois worked as a secretary for the Big Bear Lake School District at the Big Bear Elementary School for 14 years. While there she met an administrator and teacher Tom Hickey and in 1969 they married and combined two families.

Lois is survived by her nine children: Gee, Zane, Kathleen, Mike, Anne, Rayna, Therese, Kit, and Paul.

A celebration to honor her life will be held this summer. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Tom and Lois Hickey Scholarship may be sent to the following address: P.O. Box 182, Fawnskin, CA 92333
