Clarence “JR” Everett Hungerford, Jr.
Aka “The Big Guy” or “Gentle Giant”
April 8, 1952 – Oct. 21, 2012

Was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in nearby Bowie, MD, eldest of seven children, born to Clarence Sr. and Helena. He was a star Center for his Bowie H.S. “Bulldogs” basketball team and was known as “The Bulldog Giant”. He was being scouted by several colleges when, instead, he married his high school sweetheart, Denise Chittams.

Thereafter he enlisted in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps in 1971. In 1973, JR was blessed with his son, Rodney. After two tours in Germany, and a divorce, he returned stateside and was stationed in Colorado Springs. There he met and married Tammee Spencer. JR left the Army and they moved to San Diego where, in 1979, he was blessed with his daughter, Tiffany. He then worked in security for many years. Then in 1989, he was divorced. Several years after moving to Poway, Calif., he met Adrienne Henson in 1993. In 1997, they were married and he became a loving stepfather to her son, Alex.

In 2003, JR and Adrienne moved to Big Bear Lake, Calif., where he started a delivery service with the generous help of Ken and Marylee Myers, owners of the NAPA Auto Parts Store that Adrienne managed. JR and Adrienne spent the next nine years, before his untimely death from a heart attack, enjoying their beautiful mountain community, with wonderful, loving friends. They include the auto repair shops, the owners and staffs of the restaurants, the gang at the Bowling Barn, the staff at DOVES, where Adrienne volunteers. Also, they made dear friends at Elk’s Bingo, and, of course, “The Big Bear Lake Antique Car Club” for whom they enjoyed throwing big bar-b-q’s each year, during the annual car show, until Adrienne was diagnosed with M.S.

JR and Adrienne were living in the dream they had always spoken of…The Mountains. She thanks the community of Big Bear Lake, Calif., for helping to make that dream a reality. JR was survived by his wife and best friend of 15 years, Adrienne, his siblings, Julius, Phyllis, Michael, Joann, Terry and Stephanie, son Rodney, of Odenton, MD, daughter Tiffany and her loving wife Kristina, of San Diego, Calif., and stepson, Alex Henson of the U.S. Coast Guard, grandchildren, Anthony, Rodney, Jr., Dimitri, twin girls, Aja and Alexis, Jolee, Xander and Carissa, also, many beautiful nephews and nieces and loving mother-in law Martha Martin.

Please come and join us for JR’s “Celebration of Life” on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at “The Community Church by the Lake” 40946 Big Bear Blvd, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315
