Gale Ann Jonasson
was born Jan. 8, 1939, in St. Louis, Mo., and passed away April 17, 2011. She was the widow of
Donald Ross Jonasson and beloved mother of three sons: Craig, Carroll and Donald (and Donald’s
wife Kathleen); devoted grandmother of Connor, Kaitlin, Michael, Kayle, Daniel and William. She
and Donald Jonasson ran Ross Glass and Mirror in Los Alamitos, Calif. from 1970 to 1990 when
Don’s ill health and rough times in the construction trade cost them the business and their home
in Garden Grove, Calif. Gale returned to Big Bear, where they previously had a vacation cabin for
many years, to get back on her feet and start over.
Waitressing, temp jobs and working with the wonderful people at Snow Summit Mountain Resort
got her through the '90s, until she found her second calling as a teacher at Lucerne Valley Elementary
School. A former high school drop out, Gale in the early 1970s passed her GED, got an AA at Cypress
College (pregnant with son Donald Robert Jonasson), and a bachelor’s degree (Drama) at Cal State
Fullerton, decades before obtaining her teaching credential at Chapman University (at the age of 60).
Her “can do” spirit and irrepressible humor endeared Mrs. J to students and fellow teachers for
12 years before her retirement in 2010 (still working Snow Summit through this last winter).
There will be a memorial May 7, 2011, 2 p.m. in the chapel at Pine Summit Christian Camp, 700
Wren Dr., Big Bear Lake, CA 92315, followed by a celebration of a life of love and never giving up,
at Summit Inn at 3:15 p.m.
