was born in Boyle Heights, Calif., on Oct. 6, 1941. He was the only boy and youngest of six children.
He entered the kingdom of heaven while fishing and crabbing on vacation in Washington state with
his wife and family on Aug. 20, 2011. Less than an hour before his passing, he remarked that if he
were to die, that is where he would want it to happen.
Moving to Alhambra, Calif., in 1946, Paul attended local schools and graduated from Alhambra High
School in 1959. Paul joined the United States Navy in 1961 as a reservist at Los Alamitos, Long Beach
Naval Air Station. After completing basic training in Memphis, Tenn., Paul transferred to Long Beach
as an electronic technician and then joined an anti-submarine patrol squadron. During his eight years
in the U.S. Navy, his rating changed to jet mechanic. In 1968, squadron VA-776 was activated to
recover the Pueblo, a ship that was seized by the North Korean government.
Paul met Vera Katkov in the youth group while attending Bethany Baptist Church in Los Angeles and
they married on July 7, 1962. After completing his military service, he became an ironworker. He and
Vera had their son, Paul, and moved to Big Bear in 1976. Paul was a general contractor for nearly 30
years before changing to real estate until his retirement at the end of 2010.
Paul loved music, singing and laughing and had a kind and generous spirit, as well as a great sense of
humor. He was always whistling when working. Paul looked forward to every opportunity to hunt and
fish. He loved God, his family and his country.
He will be missed greatly by his wife, Vera, his son, Paul, and daughter-in-law Valerie. Grandkids
Nicholas and Katie have wonderful memories of time in Big Bear with their Dedushka. Paul is now
reunited in heaven with his parents, Paul and Tania Kushnerov and sister, Elizabeth Kanehen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church˜ Burundi Orphanage,
