Martha Lynne Watson-Jones

Marty died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 7, following a short illness. She was born in New York, leaving at a young age and moving many times in childhood due to her step-father's career in oil exploration, ultimately graduating high school in Anchorage, Alaska.

She earned a degree at Denver University, Colorado in 1966, and worked as a physical therapist, starting in a Denver hospital. She went to San Diego in 1974, ending up heading the PT department in an orthopedic group.

Marty loved to swim, ski, hike, camp and spend time outdoors. In 1981, she met her future husband George on a Utah rafting trip. She joined him in San Rafael in 1983 and they married in 1993 before moving to the Los Angeles area.

In 1994, she suffered a stroke and had to give up PT, which she loved and had practiced so successfully. Traveling in their motor home kept her outside, and they made many great trips mainly around the Western US. They visited Australia for the Millennium Celebration, and traveled to Italy and the UK to spend time with George's family. She moved to Big Bear City in 2003 for the clean, clear air, the mountain views and the small town living.

She leaves behind her loving husband George, and her brothers, Jack Burkett (Lori), Morgan Burkett (Christine), Alan Burkett (Amy), and her sister Emily Rundell (John), plus many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Martha Jean and step-father Ransom Lee Burkett.

Marty was a kind and wonderful lady who helped many people and is deeply missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life will take place in May in San Diego. Donations to honor her life may be made to the US Adaptive Recreation Center in Big Bear Lake. (909) 584-0269.
