William R. Wood
Born Sept. 15, 1923, Bill passed away peacefully in the Eisenhower Hospital in Rancho Mirage at
noon, Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, of leukemia. Bill was a longtime summer resident of Big Bear, and he
loved his Whispering Forest mountain home hosting a neighborhood 4th of July potluck for 38
years. Bill and his wife, Carol, have attended the Spirit of Peace Lutheran Church regularly for the
past few years, and Carol was an active member of the Big Bear Garden Club. They loved the Old
Miners Day parade and attended each of them for more than 30 years.
On Labor Day, Bill was rushed to the Big Bear emergency room and later transferred down to
Eisenhower Hospital. After a week in the hospital he was moved to a rehab center with hopes that
he would be back in their Indio winter home soon.
Bill had polio as a young man. It came back as post-polio in 1996. He began using a cane, then a
walker, and was wheelchair-bound for the past five years. He never complained, and his smile warmed
any room he occupied. He was an engineer who truly enjoyed his profession, both as owner of his own
business and later working in the aerospace industry until he retired. Bill was proud of his 8-year Navy
career, and his interment was at the Riverside National Cemetery. Bill is survived by his wife of 44 years,
Carol, and his 3 daughters, Cherry, Claudia, and Carol Sue.
