Gary Workman - Born July 25, 1948, Gary passed away peacefully Nov. 3, 2011, as a result
of a head injury suffered in a fall two weeks earlier. Lovingly at his side were daughter Kara
Smith, his brother Randy and Gary’s girlfriend Sher Noffsinger.
Gary is also survived by his mother, Clareen Workman, grandchildren Jacob and Hannah
Smith, sisters Judy Butler, Pam Thornhill and Kelley Sedoryk as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his father John and siblings Rita Yoho and Mark.
Gary grew up in Long Beach, Calif., and attended Holy Innocents Catholic Church and Polytechnic
High. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash.
A gentle soul, Gary loved baseball, basketball, fishing, gathering firewood and eating gummy
bears while watching CSI. He remained close to childhood best friend, Lynn Rizer, and looked forward
to their annual fishing trip to the Sierras.
Camping was secondary to Gary’s love of the beach. After living on Maui for 15 years, he returned
to the Mainland to earn his college degree. He ultimately moved to San Diego where he worked for
VOA as supervisor to the residential dual diagnosed treatment facility. Gary relocated to Big Bear in
2004 and worked for Big Bear Recovery Services for over 6 years. Gary took much pride in his work
as a counselor and will be greatly missed by those he has helped and lives he has touched throughout
There will be a private service in Long Beach Jan. 14, 2012. A public memorial service will be held in
Big Bear at a later date.
