Patterson Irrigator, 07/14/2011, p 27 Richard E. Phillips July 28, 1920 — July 6, 2011 Services will be today, July 14, for former Patterson Postmaster Richard E. “Dick” Phillips, 90, who died July 6 at his Modesto home. Mr. Phillips was the postmaster in Patterson for 27 years, from 1952 to 1979. He was an apricot grower for many years and a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, having served with the Air Corps Military Band. He served on the Patterson School District Board of Trustees from 1956 to 1968, the Stanislaus County Planning Commission from 1962 to 1974 and the Stanislaus County Board of Education from 1975 to 2005. He was also a director of Tri Valley Growers from 1987 to 1995, of Patterson Township Historical Society from 1998 to 2004 and of Patterson Cemetery District. He served as president of the Stanislaus 50 Plus Club in 1990. Mr. Phillips also was a member of the Patterson Rotary Club and a 50 year member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge. He was the local representative of the Salvation Army from 1952 to 1980 and a member of the Patterson Covenant Church. Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife of 68 years, Florence Phillips of Modesto; sons, Richard Phillips, and his wife, Ann, of Oakdale and Robert Phillips, and his wife, Carole, of Modesto; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Graveside services will begin at 9:30 a.m. today at Patterson District Cemetery, 10800 Highway 33, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Patterson Covenant Church, 435 W. Las Palmas Ave. Hillview Funeral Chapel of Patterson, 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., handled arrangements. Donations in Mr. Phillips’ name may be sent to Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356; or to the Patterson Covenant Church Memorial Fund, 435 W. Las Palmas Ave., Patterson, CA 95363.
