Manuel Gomes Silva Jr. 
Aug. 17, 1931 — May 12, 2011
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated today, May 19, for Manuel Gomes Silva Jr., 79, of Patterson, 
who died Thursday, May 12, at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Mr. Silva, a U.S. Army veteran, was a native of Oxnard and had lived in Patterson since 1955. He was a 
farmer for 40 years. He was also a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Patterson and a past 
member of the Patterson Lions Club.
Mr. Silva was an excellent athlete growing up, participating in softball and track. He became captain of his 
high school track team and continued to play fast pitch softball in an adult league, where he was 
acknowledged as a skilled pitcher.
He enjoyed deer hunting and fishing and took a special delight in surf fishing. In his youth, he enjoyed 
modifying hot rod cars.
Mr. Silva is survived by his son, Jim Silva of Patterson; daughters, Elizabeth Carlson of Patterson and Becky 
Drake of Cottonwood, Ariz.; brother, George Silva of Crows Landing; sister, Mary Gallagher of Ventura; 
five grandchildren; and a great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Marie Silva, and a brother, Edwin Silva.
Today’s Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 529 I St. Burial will follow in 
Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson. Hillview Funeral Chapel of Patterson will handle arrangements.
