Bass Neva M 'Staggs' 011002 p5 Neva May Bass, 68; A memorial service was held Saturday in Portland, Ore. for Neva May Bass who died there on Sept. 26. She was 68. She was born in Lompoc to Melvin and Daisie, Bughelli, Robison on Jan. 15, 1933. Bass was raised in Crows Landing and was a kindergarten teacher here at Northmead School for than 30 years retiring in 1989. She moved to Portland in 1989 and married Martin Bass on July 1, 1995. They moved to Cardiff, South Wales in 1995 and returned to Portland last year. She taught hundreds of people in Patterson over the years. Says one former student, "Neva Staggs Bass was not only a teacher, but an advocate to all her students. She made home visits, visits to students who were ill or hospitalized. She bought gifts for needy students. Anyone who had her as teacher was impacted by her." Another student said, "Neva was one of the few teachers I even remember. She taught me to read in an accelerated reading class in 1973. She was an excellent teacher; it showed in her more in work and the work of her students." Her husband, Martin Bass of Portland; son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Mary Beth Rogers of Portland; daughter Stephanie Bodes and granddaughters Sarah and Rachael Bodes, of Meridian, Ind, survive her. Arrangements are in care of Skyline Memorial Funeral Home in Portland, Ore. She died Sept. 26 in Portland, Oregon, after an extended illness. She was 68. The service will be held at I p.m. in the Northmead School cafeteria, 625 L St. Born Neva Robison in Lompoc, she was raised in Crows Landing and attended Newman schools, She began her 30 year teaching career here in 1959, making Patterson her home. She was highly regarded as a teacher and is remembered by many of her former students. In 1995 she married Martin Bass and moved to his home in Cardiff, South Wales. They returned to Portland in the spring of 2000. Survivors include her husband, son Stephen Rogers of Portland, and daughter Stephanie Bodes and granddaughters Sarah and Rachel Bodes of Idaho.
