Bell William D 320902 p5 Crows Landing Sept.1 W. D. Bell Passes Away at Crows Landing; Once more a pioneer resident of the West side has passed on - William Dowell Bell, who has lived here since 1885, dying suddenly at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning at the family home. Although in ill health for the last year, death was entirely unexpected and came as a severe shock, not only to the family but to his many friends as well. He was slightly ill during the night, but arose as usual at an early hour Tuesday morning. After walking around for a few moments, he sat down and shortly after he suffered a heart attack and expired within a few moments. Born in Chillicothe, MO, in 1833, his parents came to California in 1860, coming by way of the Isthmus of Panama, and made their home in Stockton. Later they returned to Georgia, where Bell engaged in the lumber business. There he went and won as his bride, Frances Crow, the marriage taking place in 1883. In 1885, the couple came to California, purchasing the ranch that was so many years their home, until a few years ago, when they moved to the new home facing the Modesto highway. All through the years he was greatly respected in the community and his neighbors sincerely mourn his sudden demise. Surviving him are his wife and five grown children, Sydney, of Newman; Charles, of Modesto; Helen, who lives here with her parents; Russell, of Crows Landing, and Morris, of Pasadena. Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning in the family home with Rev. S. S. Patterson of Berkeley, for many years pastor of the local Presbyterian church, officiating. Following the services the body was cremated.
