Borges Joe 450330 p1 Joe Borges Dies in Initial Assault; Pfc. Joe F. "Smokie" Borges was killed in action on Iwo Jima on February 21st, two days after the initial landing, according to a Marine Corps telegram received by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Joe Borges of Fortuna. The deceased was 20 years of age and had been employed by J. F. Ramos prior to his enlistment in the Marines on March 19, 1944. He was serving in the 4th Marine Division. He was the brother of Mrs. Joe Estrada, residing on the Pomegranate avenue dairy ranch owned by Ramos.
