Bowden James D 880322 p1 Patterson Man Drowns after Truck Goes into Canal; A Patterson man drowned Monday morning after losing control of his truck and turning over into a canal off of West Stanislaus Road near Highway 33. James Douglas Bowden, 26, was driving eastbound on West Stanislaus Road at a slow rate of speed, when the truck he was driving veered to the right, according to a California Highway Patrol report. A CHP spokesperson said Bowden then apparently over-compensated by steering right then back to the left and went off the north side of the road and flipped over into the canal about a quarter mile west of Highway 33. The time of the accident was 5:30, according to the report. The Stanislaus County Coroner listed the cause of death as drowning. Bowden was driving a 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck owned by the West Stanislaus Irrigation District, for which he has worked as a pump operator for 6 1/2 years. A supervisor reported Bowden missing at about 8 a.m. The sheriff's department was notified to check into the possibility of foul play; but a spokesperson, for the department said it was determined as a probable accident and turned over to the CHP for further investigation. Officials said it was not immediately known why Bowden lost control of the truck. Services for Bowden will be held Thursday, 10 a..m., at the Hillview Funeral chapel. The Rev. John Surratt of the Assembly of God Church will officiate. Interment will follow at the Patterson District Cemetery.
