Ellery Henry S 050219 p6 Henry Stephen Ellery March 2, 1937 Feb. 17, 2005 Graveside services will be Tuesday in Patterson for Henry Stephen Ellery, 68, of Westley, who died Thursday at Kaiser North Medical Center in Sacramento. Mr. Ellery was a native of Modesto and a lifelong resident of his family's farm in Westley. He was a self-employed farmer and fire chief. He was a 1955 graduate of Patterson High School, where he excelled in swimming, tennis and hot rods. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, and served two years in the U.S. Army. He returned home to farming and joined the local Volunteer Fire Department that his father had helped organize. He continued his fire service for 38 years, 21 of which he was fire chief for the Westley/El Solyo Fire Department, retiring in 1996. He was also an active 4-H leader and member of the American Truck Historical Society and the Horseless Carriage Club. He was also a member of the Western Growers Board of Directors, Nisei Farmers League, Stanislaus County Fire Chiefs Association, Western Railroad Association and Cal Poly Swanton Valley Pacific Railroad. He was a fire truck driver for the local area Muster Competitions. He also collected antiques, including steam engines, trucks and tractors. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 48 years, Gloria Ellery of Westley; two sons, Gordon Ellery and Scott Ellery, both of Patterson; and a sister, Margaret Alves of Sacramento. He was preceded in death by two children, Kim Ellery and Steven Ellery, and his parents, Henry and Phyllis Ellery. Tuesday's graveside service will be at 11 a.m. at Patterson District Cemetery, 10800 Highway 33. Services will be conducted by Hillview Funeral Chapel, Patterson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westley/El Solyo Fire Department, P.O. Box 411, Westley 95387, or to the Steven Ellery Scholarship Fund, c/o Vernalis 4-H, 1536 E. Frank Cox Road, Patterson 95363.
