Ellery Steven W 810831 p1 I Killed in Friday Accident; Patterson - Investigation into Friday night's head-on collision on Highway 33 that killed one youth and seriously injured another is continuing early this week. The California Highway Patrol is seeking the identity of the two occupants of a southbound pickup that apparently pulled out to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with a smaller pickup driven by Steven William Ellery of Westley. Ellery, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene just north of Marshall Road. Seriously injured with facial lacerations and a broken left arm was Cathy Birch, daughter of Bill and Judy Birch of rural Patterson. She was transported by Mediflight helicopter to Memorial North Hospital in Modesto. She will be a junior this fall at PHS. Also taken to Memorial North was the driver of the southbound pickup, whose name was not immediately available. His condition was not known, and investigating officer. had reportedly received several names. It was thought he was a farm worker from Mexico who was temporally living in Patterson. Also being investigated was the whereabouts of a second occupant of the pickup. He reportedly was injured, according to witnesses at the scene, but was not transported to the hospital. Officers were seeking his identity. Several others witnessed the accident, including Steven Ellery's younger brother Scott who was following in another vehicle. A funeral service for Steven Ellery will be held Tuesday at 10 am at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Patterson, where he was a member. Burial will be in Patterson district cemetery. He was a member of the Vernalis 4-H club and the future Farmers of America. He graduated from PWS this past spring and was employed by B & K Trucking of westley. Survivors include his parents, Henry and Gloria Ellery of Westley; brothers Gordon and Scott of Westley; and grand parents Phyllis Ellery of Westley and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sears of Patterson. The family requests that remembrances to sent to the Vernalis 4-H Club, Box 584, Westley, CA 95387.
