Emerson Hugh R 810824 np Graveside Rites Planned for Hugh Emerson; Newman - A graveside service will be held today, Monday, at 2 p.m. at Hills Ferry Cemetery for longtime Newman resident Hugh R. Emerson. Emerson, 82, died Thursday following a long illness. A native of Wisconsin, he had lived in Newman for 40 years and was an Army veteran of World War I. He was a retired ware-houseman who had been employed by the Carnation Co. He attended Northland College in Wisconsin before enlisting in officer training in 1918. He then graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1920 with a degree in agriculture; and farmed in that state until 1928. For the next t two years he sailed the Pacific as a marine fireman. After working in Wisconsin as a plant disease control superintendent, he moved to Newman in 1942 to work on the Guayule rubber project under the U.S. Forest Service. Friends may visit at the Evans-Krieger Funeral Chapel through Monday morning. He was a member of the Sierra Club, American Forestry Association, Save the Redwoods League, Newman Post 110 of the American Legion, and the Orestimba Presbyterian Church. He also was active in alcohol prohibition work. Survivors include two sons, David Emerison of Nevada and Crague Emerison of San Jose, and four grandchildren. Remembrances should be sent to the donor s favorite charity.
