Twins Drown near Vernalis While Swimming; Two more were added to the heavy seasonal toll of the San Joaquin River
below Vernalis Friday as twin sons of a Mexican family engaged in migratory labor were drowned. Manuel and Joe
Gallegos, 18 year old sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lazero Gallegos were the victims. The family was picnicking on the bank
when the boys went in swimming.  According to the story told by the others, one of the boys disappeared and the other
went to his rescue, only to sink from sight also. Neither of the twins was an experienced swimmer. Members of the party
recovered the bodies about twenty minutes later and the Tracy Fire Department resuscitator was employed for two hours
in efforts to revive them, but to no avail.
