Gillum Sept. 6, 1936 � June 8, 2007 A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday for former Patterson resident Thomas Courtney Gillum, who died Friday at his home in Modesto. Mr. Gillum, 70, a native of Houston, Texas, spent his early life in Texas, Louisiana and Southern California. In 1949, the family moved to San Jose, where he lived until 1979. On Jan. 23, 1965, he married Phyllis Nadine Moak Gillum at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in San Jose. He has lived in Stanislaus County the past 28 years, in both Patterson and Modesto. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in Germany, Mr. Gillum became a research and development technician for a number of Silicon Valley companies. In 1975, he went to work for Orchard Supply Hardware in San Jose. He retired in 1998 from the OSH store on Sisk Road in Modesto. Retirement for Mr. Gillum meant time for many family activities, vacations and the shaping of his yard into a special sanctuary for the entire family, especially the grandchildren. Mr. Gillum is survived by his wife of 42 years, Phyllis N. Gillum of Modesto; his children, Martin Thomas Gillum, and his wife, Tina, of San Jose, James Russell Gillum, and his wife, Amy, of Benicia, Gregory Vincent Gillum, and his wife, Linda, of Ceres, Mari Teresa Gillum of San Jose and David Sean Gillum, and his wife, Brenda, Dale Courtney Gillum, and his wife, Melanie, Joseph Philip Gillum, and his wife, Sarah, and Kelly Jonathan Gillum, all of Modesto; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Walker of Yakima, Wash., and Sherry Forslund of Weaverville; a brother, John Gillum of Portland, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews and their children, as well as other relatives and friends. Mr. Gillum was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Womack Gillum and Arlene Courtney Gillum, and by a sister, Marlene Gillum Atkins. Friday�s Mass will begin at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 529 I St., in Patterson. Burial will follow in Patterson District Cemetery, 10800 Highway 33, Patterson. Visitation will be observed from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions in Mr. Gillum�s name may be sent to a charity of the donor�s choice; to the education funds of St. Stanislaus Catholic School, 1416 Maze Blvd., Modesto 95351; to Central Catholic High School, 200 S. Carpenter Road, Modesto 95351; or to Father Connors Endowment Trust Fund, P.O. Box 1174, Patterson 95363. Oakdale Memorial Chapel, 830 W. F St., in Oakdale, is handling arrangements and Hillview Funeral Chapel, 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., in Patterson is handling services.
