Gutierrez Josefina 030821 p2 3 Die in 1-5 Crash South of Westley; A Suisun City woman and a Vallejo couple died early Monday in a single-car crash on Interstate 5, just south of Westley. Killed were Adeline DeGuzman, 19, and Josefina and Gregorio Gutierrez, both 75. California Highway Patrol reported that motorist Joyce Gutierrez, 18, and her family were returning home from a family gathering in San Diego. The Suisun City woman was headed north near Ingram Creek Road in a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche just after 3 am. Gutierrez's father, Jose Gutierrez, 56, also of Suisun City, had been driving the Avalanche just south of Santa Nella, according to the report. He reportedly awoke his daughter to take the wheel. The car continued northbound at 75 to 80 mph in the left lane. Then for unknown reasons, it swerved hard to the right and the left and to the right again. It flipped five times in the roadway before going down an embankment off the right shoulder, according to the report. Killian said family friend Adeline DeGuzman, who was seated in the left rear, was partially thrown from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. The driver's grandparents. Josefina and Gregorio Gutierrez, were sitting in the middle and right rear. Both remained in the car and died in the crash. Joyce Gutierrez suffered a fractured skull and was transported to Modesto's Doctors Medical Center, where she is listed in good condition. Jose Gutierrez, seated in the passenger seat, went to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where he is listed in serious but stable condition with a broken vertebrae. The CHP report indicates that everyone in the car was wearing a seat belt. Joyce Gutierrez was not cited in the accident. The slow lane was closed for 30 minutes Monday morning as CHP officers investigated the accident. "its been kind of a bad weekend for people," said Patterson Police (sic. Fire) Chief Bill Kinnear, who was called out to assist in the recovery afterward.
