Patterson Irrigator, 07/18/2007, p 8 Raymond Edwin Hector Aug. 5, 1915 July 13, 2007 A memorial service will be Friday for former West Side farmer Ed Hector, 91, who died Friday evening at his home. A third-generation California native, Mr. Hector was born in San Jose but spent most of his life farming in the San Joaquin Valley communities of Tracy, Westley and Vernalis. He retired to the Modesto area, where he raised backyard crops of tomatoes, corn, apples and peaches. Mr. Hector served on the advisory boards of Diamond Walnut and the California Lima Bean Growers Association. A man of many interests, Mr. Hector earned his private pilots license in 1946 and took his brideto- be on their first date in his Taylorcraft airplane. His passion was antique automobiles, and he restored and owned several Ford Model Ts and Model As, a 1911 Hupmobile, a 1903 Oldsmobile and several other vintage cars, as well as a Caterpillar 10 tractor. A past president of Modesto and Bay Area Horseless Carriage clubs, Mr. Hector participated with his wife in many tours and made countless friends along the way. The Hectors were longtime members of the Lutheran church both Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Patterson and Grace Lutheran Church of Modesto. Mr. Hector had an insatiable curiosity about how things worked, whether machines or nature, and his morning routine of crossword puzzles and reading kept him mentally sharp until his death. He will be remembered as a gentleman of great integrity, generosity, and humor. Mr. Hector is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rose; sons, Raymond Hector Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., Richard Hector of Moss Beach and David Hector of Mountain Ranch; sister, Mabel Stagnaro of Stockton; 13 grandchildren; four great- randchildren; and Ossi Niemimuukko, an AFS student from Finland.
