Hochschild Joe 820712 np Former Editor J. Hochschild Dead at 61: Joe Hochschild, former Delano mayor who was editor and publisher of the Patterson Irrigator in the early 1950's, was buried last Wednesday in Delano where he made his home. He died the previous Sunday in Los Angeles at the age of 61. A native of Connecticut, he moved to California in 1945 as a public relations representative for Southern Pacific Railroad. Prior to that he served in the US Air Force during World War II, receiving the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. The journalist, who graduated from the University of Iowa s school of journalism, purchased the Irrigator from Lowell Jessen, owner of the Turlock Journal, about 1950. He later owned the weekly newspaper in partnership with Ray Chapman, who bought out Hochschild s interest in 1954. Hochschild then moved his family to Delano and for 17 years owned and operated the Delano Press Print Shop. After that, he became manager of KXEM, a Spanish radio station in that city, for four years. Hochschild served on the Delano city council for 16 years, and was mayor on two occasions from 1966-68 and 1976-78. He was involved in city service during the period when that community experienced the grape strike controversy that eventually spread nationwide. His community activities were numerous, and many of them involved youth groups. He also was a member of the Delano Community College board of directors and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Helen; two sons, Steven of Santa Ana and Pete of Long Beach; four daughters, Lynn of Bakersfield, Kay Wachtel of Studio City, Jane Delloye of Texas, and Susan of Germany; a brother, Stewart of Connecticut; and two grandchildren. The family has requested that remembrances be sent to the Delano Youth Organization, of which he was a past president.
