Hoffman Elwyn D 491013 p1 Irrigator Founder Dies In Lake County; Elwyn D. Hoffman, founder of the Patterson Irrigator, passed away recently in Lake County, where he has resided since disposing of the paper in 1919. He started the Irrigator on August 31, 1911, a year after the founding of the new community. A vigorous writer with considerable literary talent, he made the Irrigator famous through the valley with his editorial writings and running debates with other journals. The "jackrabbit editor," as he was nicknamed from his angular physique, was beloved for his kindly humor, both in prose and verse. He was intimate of Jack London and other celebrities and also collaborated in a popular song which gained considerable circulation. Forced to retire to by illness to outdoor pursuits, he retained his keen interest in the community he had helped build and followed the Patterson news up to his death. Born in Pleasant Valley, Nevada County, Hoffman was 76 years of age.
