Holidy Edith L 610413 p1 Edith Lavon Holidy Killed by Train; A North wind was blowing hard that day and Edith Lavon Holidy, 12, of Patterson, couldn't hear the train blowing its whistle at the crossing just a few hundred yard away. This coupled with a bandana tied tightly around her head, Police Chief Alex Kosich speculated that probably led to the death of the girl when she was struck by a Southern Pacific freight-train last Friday, The Rev. Albert Foster, a witness to the tragedy, said the girl was eating an ice cream bar and only at the last second saw the train, too late to avoid it. Home from school with a cold, the seventh grader had left for the market to obtain some refreshments. She was hit when she crossed the tracks on a footpath leading from the Liberty Super market to her home on North 1st Street. Witnesses say they observed that she looked very carefully before crossing Highway 33. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Holidy, Edith was considered a better than average student at school. She leaves two brothers Leonard 16 and David 5, and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Holidy of Santa Clara County and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Brawley of Oklahoma. Services were held at Evans Funeral Chapel with Rev. J. C. Gaither, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, officiating. Burial was at Del Puerto cemetery.
