Hershel Theo Howard
May 23, 1924 � April 21, 2009
A graveside service will be Tuesday for Hershel Theo Howard of Newman, who died 
Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Mr. Howard, 84, was a native of Morrilton, Ark., and a resident of Newman for 59 
years. He worked for Carnation Creamery as a general laborer for 15 years and 
previously worked for the Newman-Crows Landing School District for 10 years.
Mr. Howard attended the First Baptist Church of Newman and served in the U.S. 
Army. He was a member of the Newman 50-Plus Club and Thousand Trails RV Club, 
and enjoyed fishing and camping.
Mr. Howard is survived by his son, Theo Howard of the Bay Area; daughters, Joyce 
Nolan of Modesto and Jana Browning of Turlock; brothers, Ray Howard of Redding 
and Wilburn Benifield of Turlock; sisters, Wilma Ghisletta of Patterson, Connie 
Hawkins of Modesto and Linda and Judy of Oklahoma; sister-in-;law, Rosie Howard 
of Newman; seven grandchildren; and eight great‑grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Howard, who died in 1999; and his 
son, Dwaine Howard, who died in 1967.
A visitation will be observed from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hillview Funeral 
Chapel, 1258 R St., in Newman. Tuesday�s graveside service begin at 1 p.m. 
Tuesday at Patterson District Cemetery, 10800 Highway 33.
Contributions in Mr. Howard�s name may be sent to a charity of the donor�s 
choice. Hillview Funeral Chapel, 1258 R St.,
in Newman, is handling arrangements.
