Huckaby Jeremy 840531 np Youth Killed in Motorcycle Mishap; The Memorial Day holiday in Patterson was marred by the death of a 6- year-old child in a motorcycle accident Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Jeremy Huckaby was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by his uncle Ralph Huckaby, 25, which struck a cable strong across a roadway adjacent to the Delta Mendota Canal a mile north of Ward Avenue. Ralph Huckaby, southbound on the roadway, failed to sea a cable which had been erected to keep out motorists. The collision knocked both Huckaby and his nephew to the ground. Jeremy s father, Ray Huckaby of Patterson, was riding another motorcycle behind and saw the mishap. Ray rushed to seek aid from nearby resident Dr. Albert Anderson, who came to the accident scene. Rescue units from the Patterson Fire Department and Del Puerto Hospital paramedics rushed to the mishap, along with officers from the California Highway Patrol. The Medi-Flight helicopter took the injured boy to a medical facility in Modesto where he was pronounced dead from severe chest injuries. ( Tuesday evening it was noticed that fresh strips of white cloth were tied along three cables which block the dirt roadway adjacent to the canal between Sperry and Ward avenues. The strips were apparently placed there as a visual warning to passing motorists. Witnesses to the Saturday mishap indicate the fresh strips of cloth were not there Saturday, only a few faded pieces of rag which were hard to see. Signs are posted at the cables, however, stating that the roadway is off limits to trespassers. The roadway is operated by the Bureau of Land Management division of the federal Department of the Interior. ) Ralph Huckaby received an injured left hand in the accident. Jeremy was a native of Patterson and a kindergarten student at Northmead School. Besides his father, he is survived by his mother Pam and his brother Travis, all of Patterson. Funeral services for the boy were held yesterday at the Evans Chapel with the Rev. Roy Huckaby, Jeremy's cousin, officiating. Interment was at the Patterson District Cemetery. Jeremy s other survivors include aunts Lori, Tina and Molly Hefner of Patterson; grandparents George and Louise Hefner and Glenn and Helen Huckaby of Patterson; great-grandparents Cecil Stooksberry of Patterson and Ann and Charles Barker of San Ramnn; and great great grandparents Exie Hefner of Mangum, Oklahoma, Jim Huckaby of Patterson and Kjestine Eistine of San Ramon.
