Hurner Bernhard 940222 p3 Bernhard Hurner, 89; Funeral services will be held today for Bernhard "Mix" Hurner who died in San Antone Valley on Saturday. He was 89. The funeral is at 7 p.m. at Darling-Fischer Garden Chapel, 471 E. Santa Clara St., in San Jose. Graveside services will be held at the Paul Gerber Cemetery in San Antone Valley, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. Hurner was born in Switzerland on July 31,1904. He attended schools in Switzerland and graduated from the agricultural college. He then entered the military and served in the cavalry. Upon his discharge from the army, he emigrated to the United States and took a job with Paul Gerber in San Antone Valley, where he lived the rest of his life. Marrying the Gerbers' daughter, Helen, the couple took up a homestead and built a small cabin, which gradually was expanded as the family grew. He worked in the West Vaco Mines and ran trap lines in the winter. He later worked on the Santa Clara County road crew for 15 years, before retiring and settling down to ranch life. Survivors include his wife, Helen, of San Antone Valley; sons Keith Hurner of San Antone Valley and Ronald Hurner of Sheridan, and daughter Ruth Stoddard of San Antone Valley. He had 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family prefers that remembrances go to California Cattlewomen's Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1441 Park Ave., Tracy, 95376.
