Shocked The community was shocked last Thursday morning when word spread of Wednesday evening s tragedy that resulted in the arrest of a 16-year-old PHS student and the hospitalization of another local student. "It s so senseless," Mayor Tim Durbin commented late Thursday. Durbin, himself a sheriff s deputy in Alameda County, explained that many young people don t recognize the consequences of their violent acts, especially when weapons are involved. PHS Principal Vince Rucobo said the school s campus was especially quiet late last week after the tragedy. "We ve had a number of students who are obviously very upset, and we ve had counselors available for them," the administrator noted. "I ve asked the teachers to point out any students they think are having particular trouble." When asked if he was concerned that other students might cause trouble because of the double stabbing incident, Rucoba said be didn t think so. "They, the three youths involved in the incident, didn t have any past with each other, no history," Rucobo commented. Court Appearance The 16-year-old youth accused of stabbing Iniguez was scheduled for a Juvenile Hall appearance Monday in Modesto. Patterson Police Department officials appeared before the judge Friday and asked that murder and attempted murder charges be brought against the youth. "From that point on, it is entirely up to the court officials because he is a juvenile," Commander Tyrone Spence noted. The suspect s name was not released. He reportedly had moved here two weeks ago from the Tracy area. Fight Started According to Patterson police Sgt. Noel Vento, Iniguez and a friend, Magdeleno Bravo,17, were walking along North Seventh Street on their way to the Patterson High gym where the wrestling meet was in progress. The suspect was walking from his residence on Toyon Lane, also headed to the gym. He was behind the other two youths. It was shortly before 8 p.m. Why are you mad-dogging us? they reportedly turned and asked. Then one of them hit the suspect in the nose, which later was determined to have been broken by the blow. Vento said an unidentified teacher shouted at the youth to stop, and the fight in the area of the teachers parking lot on Seventh Street broke up. Iniguez and Bravo continued on to the gym. Standing out front, they told a friend about their fight and that they had "kicked ---." Momentarily the 16-year old appeared and another comment was made. Chase Is On At that point the suspect ran across Seventh Street and up J Street, with the other two youths in pursuit. Bravo caught up and was running parallel with the fleeing suspect, who suddenly turned to veer into an alley. Vento said Bravo was stabbed at that point, and the suspect continued his run up the alley. lniguez continued the chase and was stabbed twice behind 207 N. Seventh St. which is across from the gym. One wound in his upper chest severed the aorta. Three other youths outside the gym also ran across the street and joined the chase, and a fourth also crossed the street to watch, Vento noted. Some of them assisted in bringing Bravo and Iniguez back to the area of the gym where a Patterson adult who had witnessed the chase took them to Del Puerto Hospital in his vehicle. Transferred From there Bravo was transferred by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto where he is now recovering from his wounds. Iniguez was taken by ambulance to the same medical facility but was pronounced dead on arrival. Patterson police were called by hospital personnel and responded just after 8 p.m. After arriving at the hospital, another call was received from the suspect s mother, and an investigating officer was met in the front yard of the Toyon Lane residence by the boy s parents. They said their son was inside and visibly upset. He had only shortly before left for the school, but returned and said the police should be called because he had stabbed someone. The knife was found on a kitchen counter inside the residence. The youth was taken to the police department, then to Del Puerto Hospital where a blood sample was taken and his broken nose was checked. His parents then brought a change of clothes to the police department, and the suspect was taken to Juvenile Hall in Modesto. It was the second death of a local teenager, involving a weapon, in the past 10 weeks. A 15 year old Patterson girl was shot and killed in a local residence in November.
