Isquierdo, Francosco 060218 p4 Westley Man Drowns When Car Goes into Canal Francisco Isquierdo, 44 A Westley resident's body was found in the Delta-Mendota Canal on Tuesday night. Francisco Isquierdo, 44, drowned after the car he was driving went into the canal about half a mile south of Hamilton Road, according to the Stanislaus County coroner's office. Investigators said they are not sure how his car ended up in the canal. Isquierdo's family told police he had been missing since Feb. 11. The family suspected he was missing when he didn't show up for work Monday. "Whenever he's gone for more than a day he would call," said Adela Isquierdo, Francisco's sister. Amelia Isquierdo, Francisco's sister-in-law, found evidence his car entered the canal Tuesday while she was searching for him, said Tom Killian, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. She found skid marks and a piece of Isquierdo's car close to where police found the body at about 3:09 p.m. "They always drive the canal because they live by the canal," Adela Isquierdo said. Francisco Isquierdo worked as a welder and was born in Patterson. Killian said there were no safety restraints for the driver in the red 1993 Ford Escort that Isquierdo was driving. He said it is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved, and that the investigation will continue. Whenever he's gone for more than a day, he would call."
