Isquierdo Julian 050323 p3 Man killed trying to stop shooter on H Street; Julian Isquierdo, shot to death early Friday evening on H Street, was a hero, according to police officers investigating the murder. Isquierdo tried to stop a suspected shooter from firing his gun when he got hit, according said Jason Woodman, spokesman for the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. Arrested on suspicion of murder were 18-year-old Jesus Sanchez and a 17-year-old. Police did not release his identity, because he is a minor. Both suspects are from Patterson. "We're disturbed about this tragic and senseless act," Patterson Police Chief Tyrone Spencer said Monday. "When these things occur, it's left up to the community to pull together and try to discourage these juveniles from becoming involved in gang activity." Patterson hasn't had a homicide for six years. Three people were killed in Patterson on Aug. 13, 1999, in a shootout on the 200 block of North First Street. Newspaper reports from the time state that the crime was gang-related. The victims were Pedro Valdovinos, 40, Raymondo Gonzalez, 25, and Michelle Amber Salen, 16. Regarding the latest tragedy, Sgt. Joe Camarda of Patterson Police Services said that residents of the working-class neighborhood who heard the shots and saw the suspect vehicle speed away provided information that led to the arrests. Police reports say there was a third teenager in the suspect's vehicle, but he was not arrested. The trouble started earlier Friday afternoon when the 17-year-old got into an argument with one of the victim's cousins. Woodman said that by the time the 17-year-old returned to the intersection of North Fifth and H with Sanchez, he was still angry. Isquierdo's girlfriend, Barbara Reyna, said on Monday that Isquierdo had called her just before the shooting and said that a teenager in the area "was acting stupid with my cousin." Reyna told him not to start anything with the teen, and Isquierdo promised he wouldn't. "The victim told him to just chill out, basically," Woodman said. "And the suspect wouldn't leave, and that's when the suspect pulled out a gun and actually pointed it at some other people. And that's when the victim tried to restrain him, and the victim got shot." The violence took place just before 6 p.m., according to police reports. Camarda said Deputy Adam Basajian first on the scene and Camarda helped Basajian perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Isquierdo, whom they found lying face down in the middle of the street. Patterson District Ambulance personnel arrived about 10 minutes after the officers started CPR, Camarda said. Isquierdo was taken to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, and the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office recorded his death at 6:39 p.m. Police took the 17-year old into custody at about 10 p.m. that night, when relatives took him to Patterson Police Services Substation, Camarda said. Deputies arrested Sanchez at 6 the following morning. Woodman said Sanchez would also face homicide charges. "It wasn't a drive-by, so he's not charged because he drove him there, but he was involved in other aspects of the plan," Woodman said. The youth is at Stanislaus County Juvenile Hall, and Sanchez is being held at Stanislaus County Jail with no bail, said Lt. Adam Christianson of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. "All I know is that they got into an argument, and yeah, they're from the same gang," Woodman said. "The suspect obviously got incredibly angry, and there was some alcohol involved, too." Spencer said both the 17- year-old and the victim were documented Norteo street gang members, and they knew each other. Woodman said suspects in Stanislaus County must meet three or more criteria to qualify as documented gang members. Those include associating with other gang members, wearing gang colors or tattoos and admitting gang involvement. He said another criterion is possession of gang paraphernalia, such as red bandannas, blue belts or belt buckles with gang lettering. Spencer said he did not want to say police would step up enforcement in response to Friday's shooting, because police are constantly operating in that mode. "We will continue to emphasize that parents need to get a handle on their kids' activities," Spencer said. "The gang lifestyle is a dead end street."
