Navalles Juan S 050615 p2 Man Dies During Annual Bike Ride in Del Puerto Juan Silvestre Navalles A 64-year-old Ceres man collapsed on his bicycle and died Saturday during the 16th Annual Canyon Classic Century bike ride in Del Puerto Canyon. The ride features three distances, 100 miles, century, 62 miles, metric century, and a 25- mile family fun ride Juan Silvestre Navalles died at about 11:30 a.m. near the Del Puerto Canyon Road 2-mile marker, according to Stanislaus County Deputy Coroner Misty Leach. Leach said on Tuesday that the cause of death had not yet been determined. The event is sponsored by Modesto North Rotary Club, and club member Judy Jensen said she heard Navalles had stopped at a bike ride rest station at Frank Raines Park about 16 miles west of Patterson and apparently had headed back down the canyon. Jensen said that would indicate he was participating in the metric century route, and Navalles said he collapsed near the two-mile marker, just inside the canyon. "We have no idea what happened to him," Jensen said. "For us, it was very sad. We've never lost somebody on one of our rides." Jensen said 275 people participated in the event. The rides start at Creekside Middle School and the 100-mile route goes up Del Puerto Canyon Road and onto San Antonio Valley Road into the Livermore valley. It returns along Corral Hollow Road and ends at Creekside Middle School. The metric ride proceeds to Frank Raines Park, then back down the canyon and south to Diablo Grande. The Quarter Century (25-mile) ride goes from the middle school to Grayson. Navalles' daughter, Sylvia Moulyn, said Monday that her father has been cycling since he was a young man. "I just feel that he was doing what he loved to do and that was his passion," Moulyn said. "And he had been doing the cycling since he was a young man." Funeral services will be Friday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel, in Modesto.
