Nelson Alvin E 960123 p1 Funeral Wednesday for Alvin E. Nelson; A funeral service will be held here Wednesday for long time Patterson resident Alvin E. Nelson. He died Saturday at his home following a short illness. He was 84. He was a native of Duluth, Minnesota and came to Patterson with his family in 1921, observing his 10th birthday on the train. After graduation from Patterson High School he was employed by Lyle Johnson for a time, then went to work at the Yancey Lumber Co., yard in Patterson as a bookkeeper. He worked for 41 years at the yard retiring as a manager in 1976. He had nearly 43 years of perfect attendance in the Patterson Lions Club, and served as the organization's president in 1955-6. He was honored last spring with the club's Melvin Jones Award for dedicated humanitarian service, and continued to faithfully work in club projects until his death. He was also a member of' the Patterson 50-Plus Club. On June 21, 1936 he married Pattersonite Martha Schaub, and they observed their 59th wedding anniversary in 1994. She preceded him in death last Jan. 24. Not only was he helpful with customers at the lumber yard, but continued to assist many of them, even after retirement. He was very handy at repairing locks, and had many friends in the community. "He didn't have an enemy, ever," one of them said this week. A service will he held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow. Visitation will he today, Tuesday, from 5-1; p.m., also at the chapel. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Honebein of Fremont and Janet Heffner of Citrus Heights; four grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren.
