Neuman Ruben 040714 p4 Ruben Neuman; Local Police on Lookout after Shooting Officers Suspect Saturday s Attack in Newman Is Gang Related Patterson police are keeping an eye out for gang activities in the wake of a fatal gang related shooting in Newman on Saturday. Newman resident Ruben "Joey" Neuman, 21, died in an ambulance shortly after a drive-by shooting at 10:44 p.m. Newman Police Department officials said police are on the lookout for a dark color sport utility vehicle and a gray pick-up that may have been involved. Reports say four men got out of the vehicles and beat Neuman, then one of then pulled out a gun and fired. "We re following up on all information we re receiving," Newman Lt. Edward Katen said Tuesday. "We re receiving a lot of calls, and we re not discounting anything. We re following up on every lead, every tip, everything". Katen said the method of the attack and the fact that Neuman was a documented gang member enabled police to conclude the murder was gang-related. Katen also said the victim was wearing red. Patterson Police Services Detective Frank Navarro said red is the color normally associated with the Norteno street gang. He said a recent flurry of shootings in Modesto coupled with sporadic activity on the West Side have caused local police to step up patrols in gang hot spots. Nortenos frequent blocks south of E Street between Highway 33 and Ward Avenue and neighborhoods between East Las Palmas and Walnut avenues, Navarro said. He said there also is another Norteno faction that fans out in Newman, Patterson, Westley and Vernalis. "And we have some of the southerners, Surenos, that hang out in the area of Felipe Garza Park," he said. The last Patterson shooting was reportedly a drive-by that occurred three or four years ago on North Hartley Street. The Newman police dispatch states that Saturday s alteration took place at Kern and P streets in Newman. The intersection stands just a block west of the Newman police station. Officers said they found Neuman lying in the street. The Stanislaus County Sheriff s Department is leading the investigation, assisted by Newman police.
