Nunes Manuel F 910625 p3 Rites Today Planned for Manuel Nunes; Final rites will be held today, Tuesday, for longtime West Side resident Manuel Ferreira Nunes who gave much of his time and energy to his adopted country. He died Saturday at age 91. A Mass will he held today at 10 am, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial in Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman, will follow. A rosary was held Monday evening at the church where he was a member. He was born in 1899 on Pico, the Azores, and came to the United States in 1916, settling in the Crows Landing area. In January 1918, he was drafted into the United States military, but the war ended before he could see duty. He became a United States citizen in 1925. In 1930 he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Orestimba High School District and served 11 years including five as chairman. He also served on the Stanislaus County Grand Jury in 1949 and 1950, and in 1949 was appointed to the board of the Turlock Mosquito Abatement District, representing the West Side for the next 13 years. Also, in 1949 he helped organize the Crows Landing Lions Club. He was a member of the Elks Club as well as UPEC, IDES, SES, and St. Anthony s Portuguese organizations. One of his highlights was a 1950 invitation to participate in a goodwill tour of European nations with a group of business men, farmers, and newsmen. They went behind the Iron Curtain to Russia, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany as well as Finland, Sweden, France and England. In 1962 he moved to Santa Cruz and the next year served on the grand jury of Santa Cruz County. He was elected commissioner of the Capitola fire District in 1965 and served four years. He moved back to Patterson 11 years ago. Survivors include a son, Ernest Nunes of Crows Landing; a daughter, Marian Taylor of Sacramento; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four brothers, John F. Nunes of Patterson, George Nunes of San Jose, Frank Nunes of Milpitas, and Hermengildo Nunes, the Azores; and two sisters, Ellen Mello of Turlock and Margaret Ferreira, the Azores. The family requests that remembrances be sent to Sacred Heart Church, 529 I St., Patterson.
