Oliva Victor 951114 p1 2 Die in Separate Vehicle Accidents; Jason Ard, 22, and Victor Oliva, 18, were both killed in car accidents this weekend. Ard was killed at 12:36 a.m. Sunday while returning from a party in Del Puerto Canyon. Ard was a passenger in a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass being driven by David Sanchez, 20, also of Patterson. According to Officer Brown of the California Highway Patrol, Sanchez was intoxicated when he allowed the car to drift onto the right should of the road. Officers say Sanchez then overcorrected causing his car to drift onto the left shoulder. It was when he corrected a third time that the vehicle rolled, landing on its top on the south shoulder of Del Puerto Canyon Road. Sanchez, who remained inside the vehicle, suffered a broken leg and dislocated hip as well as laceration to his right knee. Sanchez was taken by Air Med to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Thrown from Car Ard was thrown from the vehicle and landed in the middle of Del Puerto Canyon Road. According to Brown, it is unknown whether he was already dead at this time. A second vehicle, a 1982 Chevy Silverado driven by Janae Bcttencourt, 17, also of Patterson, was also headed east on Del Puerto Canyon Road, returning from the same party which Ard and Sanchez had attended. Approximately one minute after the initial accident, the second vehicle approached the site of the accident at 35 to 40 mph. Bettencourt's attention was drawn by the sight of Sanchez's vehicle on the shoulder and she ran over Ard, Brown explained. "There was no indication that she was intoxicated." Bettencourt immediately stopped the vehicle and Ard's body was discovered. Ard was pronounced dead on the scene. Felony DUI Sanchez was arrested for a felony charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and then released for further medical attention. Sanchez has not yet been booked. He may be charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence if it is determined that Ard was dead before he was ran over by Bettencourt's car. No charges have been filed against Bettencourt; however the accident is still under investigation. Second Death Victor Oliva, 18, was killed in a second accident at 2:55 am. on Monday at the intersection of Crows Landing and Fulkerth roads in Modesto. Oliva was a passenger in a 1989 Plymouth Colt driven by Nancy Banda, 23, of Modesto. Banda was eastbound on Fulkerth road when, for unknown reasons, she failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Fulkerth and Crows Landing roads. At the same time that Banda failed to yield right-of-way, Frank Guerrero, 29, of Pico Rivera, was driving a three axle semi northbound on Crows Landing Road. Banda's vehicle somehow found its way under the near wheels of the truck-tractor and Banda and Oliva were both killed instantly as the vehicle was crushed. The accident is still under investigation in an effort to determine why Banda did not yield night-of-way at the stop sign. No charges have been filed against Guerrero. Jason Ard, 22 Jason Kenton Ard was born in Modesto and had lived all his life in the Patterson area. He was employed by a warehouse. He graduated from Patterson High School, where he had been active in football, in 1991. A funeral will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hillview funeral Chapel burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow.
