Jon D. Olson
March 5, 1939 — Jan. 10, 2010
A service was conducted Jan. 16 for John D. Olson of Oak Park, Ill., a former 
Patterson resident who died Jan. 10 in Oak Park after a short battle with bone 
cancer.
Mr. Olson, 70, was born in Modesto and raised in Patterson. He played varsity 
basketball and tennis for Patterson High School. As a high school senior, he traveled to 
Germany through the AFS student exchange program. He was also active in the Boy 
Scouts and reached the rank of Eagle Scout.
After graduation, he attended and graduated from Pomona College, where he met the 
love of his life, his wife, Mary. They settled in the Chicago area, where he received his 
MBA from the University of Chicago. During his career, he worked for Continental 
Bank, Baxtor-Travenol and Family Services and eventually started his own firm, 
Financial Management Strategies.
Mr. Olson, a Rotarian, was active in recovery programs, served on the board of 
Hazelden Foundation for more than 20 years and was active in AA groups. He was 
also an avid golfer and a member of Oak Park Country Club.
Mr. Olson is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Houck Olson of Oak Park, Ill.; 
children, Derek Olson, and his wife, Kris, and Deirdre Olson; siblings, Jay Olson, and 
his wife, Dee, and Donna Carmichael, and her husband, Bruce; four grandchildren; and 
many nieces and nephews.
Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home in Oak Park handled arrangements.
